My First Shower

When I got married 3.5 years ago I didn't have a wedding shower or a bachelorette party... or an engagement party, or whatever other parties one might have before such an occasion. There were a lot of good reasons why I didn't have these pre-parties (we had a super short engagement, I had recently moved to a new state, etc).

So when my mother-in-law threw a baby shower for me on New Years Day, it was my first experience as the showered person at a party. It was a classic shower, complete with brunch, games, the sharing of "wives tales," lots of ladies, pink balloons, a crystal punch bowl, fine china coffee cups, gifts, and even a watermelon carved into a baby carriage:

As I was sitting there in my "mother-to-be-throne" looking like a pink balloon who swallowed a giant watermelon the reality of what's happening began to sink in and I felt the flood waters of emotion rising. It occurred to me that all the nausea, fatigue, swelling, rib pain, inattentiveness, weight gain, searing calf cramps that wake me up at night, headaches, and digestive issues I've been experiencing for the last 7 months are all leading up to something quite monumental. It also occurred to me that everything is about to change- forever. There's not much more I can say about that... she's not just a bump, or a baby... she's a whole new life! I just can't think of the words that portray what I was thinking and feeling at the moment.

It was lovely shower and now we have lots of new things for our tiny little one. Everyone was so generous and excited about our new baby... even if they didn't really know me. Who knew showers could be such a good way to start a new year? Here's to a life changing 2011 for everyone!!
